Every True Link Visa® Prepaid Card has its own routing number and account number, just like a bank account. That means you can have a cardholder's paycheck or benefits deposited straight to the Card, or send money to the Card from your own bank's website, without scheduling anything in True Link.
In this article, you'll learn where to find the Card's direct deposit information, how to set up a deposit from an employer or your bank, and when the funds will be available. If you'd like more control over the timing, or want to set up a recurring schedule you can edit later, see How to Transfer Funds From a Connected Bank Account instead.
Before you begin
- The setup happens outside True Link. You'll look up two numbers on the True Link dashboard, then give them to the employer or enter them at your bank. There's nothing to schedule or submit in True Link.
- Timing is set by the sender. Your bank or the employer decides when the money goes out, so you won't see an availability date in True Link before the deposit arrives. If you'd like that visibility, a transfer from a connected bank account is the better fit.
- Know which card you're funding. If the cardholder has a True Link Wallet* (a virtual card with its own balance, separate from the balance on the cardholder's physical card), the virtual card has its own direct deposit information too. This article covers deposits to the cardholder's physical card.
Find the Card's direct deposit information
If you manage one True Link Visa Card, the cardholder's dashboard is the first page you'll see when you sign in. If you manage multiple True Link Visa Cards, open a cardholder's dashboard by clicking the View link in that cardholder's row on the All Clients page.
- Click the Account tab at the top of the cardholder's dashboard.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page to the section titled Direct deposit information.
-
You'll see the Routing number and Account number for the Card. These are the two numbers your bank or the cardholder's employer will ask for.
You don't need to write this information down right away. You can pull it up again at any time from the Account tab.
Set up the deposit
Option 1 – Direct deposit from an employer or benefits provider
Give the Card's routing number and account number to the cardholder's employer or benefits provider, the same way you would for a checking account. Most employers have a direct deposit form for this. If the form asks for an account type, choose Checking.
Once the employer confirms the account, future paychecks or benefit payments will land on the Card automatically.
Option 2 – Transfer from your bank to the Card
Sign in to your bank's website or mobile app, or contact your bank directly, and set up an external transfer to the Card's routing number and account number. Your bank may call this an "external transfer," "transfer to another bank," or "add an external account."
Some banks verify a new external account before the first transfer goes through. Once your bank confirms the account, you can send one-time or recurring transfers to the Card from your bank whenever you like.
When your money will be available
Funds sent by direct deposit often arrive on the Card within 1 business day. This can take up to 5 business days depending on your bank or employer, and because the sending bank controls the timing, we recommend contacting them for a more precise estimate.
Once the funds have landed on the Card, the cardholder can begin making transactions.
You can read more in Funding Timelines and Limits.
Please be aware
- Account numbers are unique to each Card. If a new or replacement True Link Visa Card is ordered, that Card may have new direct deposit information. Please check the Account tab and update the information you have on file with your bank or employer.
- If you send funds to the wrong account number, contact us right away. Your funds may be returned to the bank account they were sent from (for example, your bank account, or the employer's bank account if the cardholder's wages are deposited to the Card) rather than being made available to the cardholder.
- Funds sent to a permanently closed Card will be returned. If you try to send funds to a True Link Visa Card that is permanently closed, those funds will be returned to your bank account or the employer.
- No wire transfers, checks, or credit card payments. We cannot accept wire transfers, checks, or credit card payments, including to the Card's routing and account number.
What happens next
Once your bank or employer confirms the account, direct deposit is set up. Incoming deposits appear in the cardholder's transaction history on the dashboard as they arrive. Because these deposits are initiated outside True Link, they won't appear under Transfers in the next 7 days on the Funding tab.
From here, you may want to:
- Customize Alerts – get an email or text when funds arrive on the Card.
If you have any questions about direct deposit, please don't hesitate to contact our Customer Support team.
