The True Link Wallet* is a virtual card with its own balance, separate from the balance on the cardholder's physical True Link Visa® Prepaid Card. The cardholder can't spend money in the Wallet with their physical card, so moving funds from the physical card to the Wallet is a simple way to set money aside. For example, you may want to hold back money the cardholder doesn't need yet, use those funds to pay a bill with the virtual card, or move the balance off a card that has been deactivated or reported lost.
Transfers from the physical card to the Wallet can be made available instantly, including on evenings, weekends, and holidays.
In this article, you'll learn how to move money from the cardholder's physical card to the virtual card on the True Link website, how to set up a recurring transfer, and when those funds will be available. If you'd prefer to do this from your phone, you can also make this transfer in the True Link Mobile App. See How to Transfer Funds From the True Link Mobile App for how transfers work in the app.
If you haven't opened a Wallet yet, start with How to Open a True Link Wallet. To move money the other way, see How to Transfer Funds From the True Link Wallet to the Cardholder's Card.
Before you begin
- You'll need full access. Only full access administrators can transfer funds between the cardholder's card and the Wallet. If you have assistant or view-only access, please ask a full access administrator on your account to complete these steps.
- The physical card must have funds on it. A transfer can only move money the cardholder's physical card already holds. You can check its balance on the cardholder's card in the Cards section of the Client View page.
- Know which card is which. The cardholder's physical card and the virtual card each have their own last four digits. You'll use them in the To field to confirm the money is heading to the virtual card.
Transfer funds from the physical card to the Wallet
Sign in to your True Link Dashboard on the True Link website. If you manage one True Link Visa Card, the Client View page is the first page you'll see when you sign in. If you manage multiple True Link Visa Cards, open the Client View page for a cardholder by clicking the View link in that cardholder's row on the All Clients page.
- In the Wallet section of the Client View page, click Fund Wallet. The Transfer funds window opens.
- Under From, choose the cardholder's card. It's listed under True Link accounts with the cardholder's first name and the last four digits of the card, for example "Jordan's Card (...1937)".
- Click Next.
If no bank account is connected, the window skips this list and fills in the cardholder's card for you. Continue with step 4.
- Check the From and To fields. From should show the cardholder's card, and To should show the Wallet, for example "Jordan's Wallet (...4821)". Check the last four digits in the To field before you submit, so the money lands on the virtual card rather than the cardholder's physical card. If either field is wrong, click Change selected accounts to choose again.
- In the Amount To Transfer field, enter the dollar amount to move to the virtual card.
- Under Frequency, choose One Time for a single transfer. To repeat the transfer on a schedule, see Setting up a recurring transfer below.
- Under Transfer Date, keep today's date to move the money right away, or choose a later date.
- To add a note for your own records, click + Add Memo. This step is optional.
- Check the green box below the date. For a transfer dated today, it reads "Funds arrive instantly!" For a later date, it shows the day the funds will be available.
- Read the authorization statement, then click Submit.
- A confirmation appears. For a transfer dated today, it reads "Instant transfer complete!" and lists the Amount, From, To, and Delivered on date. For a later date, it reads "You've scheduled a transfer." Click Done.
Starting from the Funding tab
You can also start this transfer from the Funding tab of the Client View page. Click Transfer funds, choose the cardholder's card under True Link accounts, and click Next. The Wallet is filled in for you in the To field. Then follow steps 4 through 11 above.
Setting up a recurring transfer
A recurring transfer moves the same amount from the cardholder's physical card to the virtual card on a schedule. In step 6, choose Weekly, Monthly, or Twice every month instead of One Time. The fields below Frequency change to match your choice:
- Weekly – under Starting on, choose the day of the week. Any day works, including Saturday and Sunday.
- Monthly – under On the, choose the day of the month.
- Twice every month – under On the and And the, choose the two days of the month.
You can add a note in the Memo field. Then read the authorization statement and click Submit. Your recurring transfer stays in place until you change or delete it.
When your money will be available
Transfers from a physical True Link Visa Card to a virtual card can be made available instantly. When you keep today's date, the money typically reaches the Wallet as soon as you click Submit. Because both cards are True Link cards, these transfers don't wait for a bank business day.
When you choose a later date, or set up a recurring transfer, the money typically moves early in the morning, Pacific Time, on each transfer date.
Check the green box before you submit. It tells you when your funds will be ready to use: "Funds arrive instantly!" for a transfer dated today, or a day, for example "Funds will be available Friday, October 16th," for a later date.
You can read more in Funding Timelines and Limits.
Please be aware
- Two balances, two purposes. The cardholder can use their physical card to spend money, and the virtual card is typically used by administrators to support the cardholder for certain purchases (e.g., large purchases, or subscriptions managed with support from the administrator like a cell phone bill).
- Confirm the destination. Check the last four digits in the To field before you submit, so the money lands on the virtual card rather than the cardholder's physical card.
- The transfer date is not always the availability date. Transfers between the Wallet and the physical card can be instant, while transfers submitted via a linked funding account or via direct deposit will take at least 1 business day to become available.
- Transfer limits. Each transfer can be up to $5,000. A transfer dated today can't be more than the available balance on the cardholder's physical card. The daily and monthly funding limits for bank transfers don't apply to transfers between the cardholder's card and the Wallet.
- Deactivated or lost cards. If the cardholder's card is temporarily deactivated or reported lost, you can still move its balance to the Wallet.
What happens next
Once you click Done, you're back on the Client View page. For a transfer dated today, the Wallet's Available balance goes up by the amount you moved, and the balance on the cardholder's card goes down by the same amount. The Total Funds amount at the top of the page stays the same, because the money is still held for the cardholder. It's just in the Wallet now.
The transfer appears on the Funding tab under Transfer history. In each card's transactions, it's listed as Card Transfer: a negative amount on the cardholder's card and a positive amount on the virtual card.
A transfer with a later date appears on the Funding tab under Transfers in the next 7 days or Future one-time transfers, and a recurring transfer appears under Recurring transfers. Below the buttons in the Wallet section, you'll also see when the next transfer initiates.
