The True Link Wallet* is a virtual card with its own balance, separate from the balance on the cardholder’s physical True Link Visa® Prepaid Card. You can use the virtual card for instant transfers to the physical card or to pay bills and make other purchases for the cardholder. Because the balance is separate from the physical card, you can make those purchases without worrying about the cardholder spending those funds from the physical card. There is no Monthly Fee charged for the virtual card.
In this article, you'll learn what you need to activate the virtual card, the ways to fund the virtual card during activation, and what you'll be able to do once it's active.
What you can do with the virtual card
- Move money to the cardholder's physical card instantly, at any time
- Pay bills and handle expenses for the cardholder using a separate balance that cannot be accessed using the cardholder’s physical card
- View reports covering total funds and each account individually.
Before you begin
- You'll need full access. Only full access administrators can open a virtual card. If you have assistant or view-only access, please ask a full access administrator on your account to complete these steps.
- The cardholder's True Link Card must already be activated. A virtual card can only be activated once the corresponding physical card has been activated.
- Decide how you'll initially fund it. You'll choose a funding method during setup. The virtual card can be funded from a linked bank account, by direct deposit, or by transferring funds from the cardholder's physical card balance. Each of these options is covered below.
- Activating several at once? If you manage many cardholders and would like to activate virtual cards in bulk, please contact our Customer Support team, and we'll be glad to help.
Step 1: Start the setup from the Client View page
Log in to your True Link administrator dashboard and go to the Client View page for the cardholder.
- If you manage one True Link Visa Card, the Client View page is the first page you'll see when you sign in.
- If you manage multiple True Link Visa Cards, open the Client View page for a cardholder by clicking the View link in that cardholder's row on the All Clients page.
Once the cardholder's physical card is active, the first time you visit the Client View page you'll see a message introducing the True Link Wallet and virtual card, along with a summary of what it does. Click Begin setup to get started. If you'd like to read more first, click See how it works.
If you previously closed that message, you can activate a Wallet at any time from this page. To do this, find the Wallet section in the top half of the page, and click Fund Wallet.
Step 2: Choose how you'll initially fund it
You'll be asked how you want money to be deposited into the virtual card. Choose whichever option you'd like to use to get started.
This choice only determines how you fund the virtual card during activation. Once it's active, you can add funds using any available method.
Option 1 – Fund from a bank account
- Select Fund with a bank account.
- Any bank account already linked to the cardholder's physical card is automatically carried over as a possible funding source for the virtual card. Choose the account you'd like to use from the dropdown, then click Next.
- To use a different account, follow the prompts to connect a new bank account. You can connect instantly through Plaid or verify the account with micro-deposits (two small test deposits we send to confirm the account belongs to you; this option can take a few days).
- Confirm the account you want is listed in the From field.
- Enter the amount you'd like to transfer.
- Choose whether this is a one-time transfer or a recurring transfer that repeats on a schedule.
- Choose the date the transfer starts.
- Read each agreement and check its box, then click Submit.
Option 2 – Fund by direct deposit
- Select Fund with direct deposit.
- Read each agreement and check its box. The Submit button becomes clickable once every box is checked.
- Click Submit.
- Your direct deposit information appears on the next screen. You'll pass this along to whoever is sending the deposit, such as your bank or the SSA.
- You don't need to write this information down right away. You can pull it up again at any time from the Client View page.
Option 3 – Move money from the cardholder's physical card
If the cardholder's physical True Link Visa Card already has a balance, you can activate the Wallet by transferring some of those funds.
- Select Fund with a card.
- The Transfer funds window opens with the cardholder's physical card already filled in as the source.
- Enter the amount you'd like to move. It can't be more than the available balance on the physical card.
- Check each agreement box, then click Submit.
- You'll see a confirmation that the transfer is complete. Click Done.
When your transfer will be available
Please note that while transfers from a physical True Link Visa Card to a virtual card can be made available instantly, transfers from a linked bank account generally take 1 business day to become available. Newer customers can see transfers take up to 5 business days to become fully available depending on the size of the transfer.
You can read more in Funding Timelines and Limits.
What happens next
Once you submit, the Wallet is active! Return to the Client View page, and you'll now see a second card in the Cards section:
- The cardholder's physical Card – labeled "For cardholder spending," showing its own balance.
- The Wallet Virtual Card – labeled "For admin spending," with its balance linked to the Wallet. This tile only appears once the Wallet is active.
The Wallet section now shows your available balance. Once there's money in it, you can use Instant transfer to card to move funds to the cardholder's physical card right away, or Fund Wallet to add more.
From here, you may want to:
- Add more money to the virtual card – schedule one-time or recurring transfers.
- Access the Wallet virtual card – find the 16-digit card number and CVV so you can make purchases.
Please be aware
- The transfer date is not always the availability date. Transfers between the Wallet and the physical card can be instant, while transfers submitted via a linked funding account or via direct deposit will take at least 1 business day to become available.
- Two balances, two purposes. The cardholder can use their physical card to spend money, and the virtual cards are typically used by administrators to support the cardholder for certain purchases (e.g., large purchases, or subscriptions managed with support from the administrator like a cell phone bill).
- Transfers from the physical card are capped at its available balance if you're using Option 3.
- Direct deposit details stay accessible. Full access administrators can retrieve them at any time from the Client View page.
