The True Link Wallet* is a virtual card with its own balance, separate from the balance on the cardholder's physical True Link Visa® Prepaid Card. If the cardholder's physical card already has money on it, you can open a Wallet by moving some of that money over. There's no bank account to connect and no direct deposit to set up, and there is no Monthly Fee charged for the virtual card. In most cases, it takes just a few minutes.
In this article, you'll learn what you can do with a Wallet, how to open one with money from the cardholder's physical card, and what you'll see once it's open. To compare every way to open a Wallet, including from a bank account or by direct deposit, see How to Open a True Link Wallet.
What you can do with a Wallet
- Keep money set aside. The cardholder can't spend the Wallet balance with their physical card, so the money is there when you need it.
- Send money to the physical card when it's needed. Transfers from the Wallet to the physical card can be made available instantly, including on evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Pay bills and make purchases. Use the virtual card to handle expenses for the cardholder, like a cell phone bill or a large purchase.
- Send money back to a bank account. In most cases, you can return money from the Wallet to a linked bank account yourself, right from the Dashboard.
- See it all in one place. View reports covering total funds and each account individually.
Before you begin
- You'll need full access. Only full access administrators can open a Wallet. If you have assistant or view-only access, please ask a full access administrator on your account to complete these steps.
- The physical card needs to be activated and have money on it. A Wallet can only be opened once the cardholder's physical card has been activated. You can move up to the card's available balance, which is shown on the cardholder's card in the Cards section of the Client View page.
- Use the True Link website. Opening a Wallet is available when you sign in on the website. It isn't available in the True Link Mobile App.
- The cardholder's identity may need to be verified first. If the Wallet section shows a message that we need to verify the cardholder's identity before the Wallet can be funded, click Verify identity and follow the prompts. You'll need the cardholder's date of birth and Social Security number.
- The True Link Card must be active. Cards that have been temporarily deactivated or reported as lost or stolen will not be able to transfer funds to the Wallet.
How to open a Wallet with money from the cardholder's card
Sign in to your True Link Dashboard on the True Link website. If you manage one True Link Visa Card, the Client View page is the first page you'll see when you sign in. If you manage multiple True Link Visa Cards, open the Client View page for a cardholder by clicking the View link in that cardholder's row on the All Clients page.
If a message introducing the True Link Wallet appears when the page opens, click Begin setup and continue with step 2.
- In the Wallet section of the Client View page, click Fund Wallet. A window opens with the cardholder's first name in its title, for example "Set up Jordan's Wallet."
- Click Fund with a card. The Transfer funds window opens with the cardholder's physical card already in the From field, for example "Jordan's Card (...1937)", and the new Wallet in the To field, for example "Jordan's Wallet". There's nothing to choose here.
- In the Amount To Transfer field, enter the dollar amount to move to the Wallet.
- Leave Frequency set to One Time and Transfer Date set to today's date. The green box below them reads "Funds arrive instantly!"
- Read the E-sign Agreement (your consent to sign and receive documents electronically), then check its box. The other two boxes become available once this one is checked.
- Read the Master Services Agreement and the statement that the cardholder has authorized you to manage their True Link service, then check both boxes.
- Click Submit.
- A confirmation reads "Instant transfer complete!" and lists the Amount, From, To, and Delivered on date. Click Done.
On the confirmation, the To line shows the Wallet as "(...XXXX)". That's expected. The Wallet's last four digits appear on the Client View page once you click Done.
When your money will be available
Transfers from a physical True Link Visa Card to a virtual card can be made available instantly. When you keep today's date, the money typically reaches the Wallet as soon as you click Submit, including on evenings, weekends, and holidays. Because both cards are True Link cards, the transfer doesn't wait for a bank business day.
Before you submit, check the green box below the date. It tells you when your funds will be ready to use. For a transfer dated today, it reads "Funds arrive instantly!"
You can read more in Funding Timelines and Limits.
Please be aware
- Two balances, two purposes. The cardholder can use their physical card to spend money, and the virtual card is typically used by administrators to support the cardholder for certain purchases (e.g., large purchases, or subscriptions managed with support from the administrator like a cell phone bill).
- The transfer date is not always the availability date. Transfers between the Wallet and the physical card can be instant, while transfers submitted via a linked funding account or via direct deposit will take at least 1 business day to become available.
- Transfer limits. Each transfer can be up to $5,000. A transfer dated today can't be more than the available balance on the cardholder's physical card.
- You only agree once. The three agreement boxes appear only when you open the Wallet. Later transfers don't ask for them again.
- You can move money back to the physical card. If the cardholder needs the money, click Instant transfer to card in the Wallet section. Transfers from the Wallet to the physical card can be made available instantly. See How to Transfer Funds From the True Link Wallet to the Cardholder's Card.
What happens next
Once you click Done, you're back on the Client View page, and the Wallet is open. The Wallet section now shows the Wallet's last four digits and its Available balance, and the balance on the cardholder's card goes down by the amount you moved. The Total Funds amount at the top of the page stays the same, because the money is still held for the cardholder. It's just in the Wallet now.
You'll also see a second card in the Cards section: the Wallet Virtual Card, labeled "For admin spending," next to the cardholder's card, labeled "For cardholder spending."
